Noise assessments for commercial and industrial sound
If you’re installing new plant, extending opening hours or starting a commercial or industrial operation near homes, the Local Authority will usually want to know how the noise will affect neighbours. In most cases they’ll ask for an assessment to BS 4142:2014+A1:2019 Methods for rating and assessing industrial and commercial sound.
At Venta Acoustics, BS 4142 assessments are a core part of our work. We know what Environmental Health Officers look for, and we write reports that answer their questions the first time. That helps you avoid delays to your planning application or to discharging a condition.

When is a BS 4142 assessment needed?
We regularly carry out BS 4142 assessments for:
- Air conditioning units, condensers and chillers
- Kitchen extract and ventilation systems
- Air source heat pumps, where a full planning application is required
- Generators, compressors and refrigeration plant
- Supermarket deliveries, service yards and loading bays
- Petrol stations, car washes and drive-through units
- Industrial processes and factory operations
- Discharging planning conditions on noise from fixed plant
- Investigating noise complaints about existing commercial or industrial sites
How the assessment works
BS 4142 compares the sound from your site with the existing background sound level at the nearest homes.
First, we work out the specific sound level: the noise your plant or operation will produce at the neighbouring property. We then add corrections for any features that make the sound more noticeable, such as tones, bangs, or noise that switches on and off. The result is the rating level.
The rating level is compared with the background sound level measured during our survey. The bigger the difference, the greater the likely impact:
- Around +10 dB or more is likely to indicate a significant adverse impact
- Around +5 dB is likely to indicate an adverse impact
- At or below the background level, there’s an indication of a low impact
The standard also requires the result to be considered in context. That might include the character of the area, the existing sound levels or the design of the neighbouring homes. This is where experience matters, and where a well-reasoned assessment can make the difference to a planning decision.

Our approach
- Agree the method. We review your proposals, identify the noise sources and nearest neighbours, and agree the survey approach and noise criteria with the Local Authority before any work starts.
- Measure the background. We install Class 1 sound level meters on site, usually for several days. That way we capture the quietest periods, including night-time if the plant will run then.
- Predict and assess. Using manufacturers’ data or our own measurements, we calculate the rating level at each neighbouring property and assess it against BS 4142.
- Recommend mitigation. If noise levels are too high, we give practical, cost-effective advice. That could be selecting quieter units, changing locations, adding acoustic enclosures or barriers, or limiting operating hours.
- Report. You receive a clear technical report that’s ready to submit with your planning application or condition discharge.
