Sound Insulation Testing

Find out how well your walls and floors really perform

Noise from neighbours is one of the most common complaints in flats and terraced houses. It’s also one of the hardest problems to fix without knowing exactly what is going wrong. Sound insulation testing measures how well your walls and floors are performing. Instead of relying on guesswork, it gives you hard data to base decisions on.

At Venta Acoustics, we use sound insulation testing as a diagnostic and design tool. It helps homeowners, landlords, developers and managing agents understand a problem, plan improvements and avoid costly mistakes.

When is sound insulation testing useful?

  • Noise problems between neighbours. If you can hear voices, televisions or footsteps from next door or upstairs, testing shows whether the wall or floor is performing poorly, and where the weak points are.
  • Before converting or refurbishing. Testing existing floors and walls before work starts shows how much upgrading is needed. That means you only pay for the improvements you actually need.
  • Replacing carpet with hard flooring. Many leases require that new wooden, laminate or tiled floors don’t make impact noise to the flat below any worse. We can test before and after installation to show that your new floor meets the lease condition.
  • Disputes and complaints. Independent measurements give landlords, managing agents and residents objective evidence to support a resolution.
  • Checking that upgrades have worked. After soundproofing works, a follow-up test confirms how much improvement has been achieved.

What we test

We carry out field measurements in line with BS EN ISO 16283, covering:

  • Airborne sound insulation. How well walls and floors block sounds such as voices, music and television.
  • Impact sound insulation. How well floors reduce footsteps, dropped objects and furniture moving.

We combine the measurements with an inspection of the construction, including flanking paths, service penetrations, back-to-back sockets, gaps around pipes and junctions between walls and floors. Small details like these often cause disappointing results, even where the main wall or floor is well built.

What you receive

After testing, you’ll receive a clear report setting out:

  • The measured performance of each wall or floor tested
  • How it compares with relevant benchmarks, such as current Building Regulations standards for new homes or the requirements in your lease
  • The likely causes of any poor performance
  • Practical, cost-effective recommendations for improvement

Please note: we don’t carry out pre-completion sound insulation testing for Building Control sign-off. Our testing is diagnostic and advisory. If you need compliance testing for a new build or conversion, we can still help you design the walls and floors so that they pass first time.

Design advice

Testing is often just the start. We can go on to help you put things right:

  • Specifying upgraded floor, wall and ceiling constructions
  • Advising on independent ceilings and wall linings, and on acoustic underlays for floating floors
  • Detailing junctions, services and penetrations to avoid flanking
  • Reviewing contractors’ proposals before work goes ahead
